Buying Fine Jewelry, Compared
| Dimension | Solifacet | Etsy |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Marketplace for fine jewelry and precious stones; holds no inventory and sells nothing of its own. | Open global marketplace connecting millions of independent creators, vintage collectors, and craft suppliers. |
| Jewelry-specific focus | Exclusively dedicated to fine jewelry and precious stones. | Broad marketplace covering crafts, gifts, handmade decor, vintage clothing, and fashion jewelry alongside select fine pieces. |
| Seller vetting | Sellers are vetted by Solifacet before they are approved to list pieces. | Open platform where anyone can set up a storefront; sellers are not vetted or screened for gemological credentials. |
| What gets checked before the piece lists | The founder personally inspects each piece in person to confirm it exists, matches its description, and is in the stated condition, and checks any certificates or paperwork. (Small accent stones and melee diamonds are not individually lab-inspected). | Pieces are not physically checked, authenticated, or evaluated by gemologists before being published in a shop. |
| Buyer protection / what happens if something is wrong | Founder-led resolution handled personally case by case, including covering costs out of pocket when warranted, backed by confirmed written purchase terms. | Etsy Purchase Protection covers qualifying orders up to $250 if an item does not arrive, arrives damaged, or is materially different, after messaging the seller first; larger orders require Etsy case escalation. |
| Returns | 3-day inspection window from delivery for approved claims (counterfeit or materially not-as-described, with valid proof). No change-of-mind returns. | Return and exchange policies are determined independently by each shop owner (ranging from 7, 14, or 30 days to final sale with no returns accepted). |
| Certificates / provenance | Certificates and supporting documentation are checked by the founder when applicable before listing. | Varies by seller; documentation depends entirely on what the individual shop owner provides, with no independent platform verification. |
| Human support | Customer service is handled directly and personally by the founder, not a ticket queue or outsourced support team. | Support is accessed through automated help topics, self-service case filing, and general platform support agents. |
| Shipping & insurance | Sellers ship within 48 hours of sale. Shipments are insured through the carrier, with tracking; shipping is paid by the buyer and included in the piece's price. | Handled independently by each seller; carrier selection, delivery timelines, and insurance coverage vary by shop. |
| Price transparency | The price you see is the price you pay, with no added buyer fees or hidden checkout surcharges. | Prices are set by shop owners; shipping costs and local sales taxes are calculated and added at checkout. |
How verification works at Solifacet
Before a piece lists, the founder personally goes to the seller, inspects the piece in person — it exists, it matches its description, its condition is as stated — and checks the certification/papers that come with it.
What we do NOT do (yet), stated plainly: melee diamonds and small accent stones are not individually lab-inspected. Inspecting each one costs more than the margin on the piece, so the industry standard is not to verify those individually. We do not claim otherwise anywhere.
If a piece turns out not to be as described, Solifacet handles it personally, case by case, and makes it right — including covering costs out of pocket when the situation warrants it. Customer service is founder-led, not a ticket queue.
What we're building (label this clearly as PLANNED, not current): a verification partner facility that will inspect every piece before it ships. Do NOT present this as already in place.
Where Solifacet differs
Etsy is a celebrated marketplace for independent artisans, custom handmade designs, and unique vintage discoveries across a vast range of price points. However, because anyone can open an Etsy shop and sell goods, listing accuracy and seller expertise vary widely, and Etsy does not authenticate or inspect jewelry before sale. Furthermore, Etsy's automated Purchase Protection funding is capped at $250, which does not cover typical fine jewelry transactions. Solifacet differs by working only with vetted sellers of fine jewelry and precious stones, where every single piece is physically examined and its paperwork reviewed in person by the founder before it appears in the marketplace.
Questions & Answers
Solifacet vs Etsy — what's the difference?
Etsy is an open marketplace for handmade crafts and vintage items where anyone can open a shop and sell without pre-listing verification. Solifacet is a curated marketplace restricted to fine jewelry and precious stones, where the founder personally inspects each piece and its documents in person before listing.
What does 'verified' mean on Solifacet?
On Solifacet, verified means the founder has traveled to the seller, personally inspected the physical piece to ensure it exists, matches its description, and reflects its stated condition, and reviewed its accompanying certificates or documentation. It does not mean every melee diamond or tiny accent stone has undergone independent lab analysis, as those stones are not individually tested.
What is Solifacet's return policy?
Solifacet provides a 3-day inspection window following delivery for approved claims involving counterfeit items or material misrepresentation, supported by valid proof. Change-of-mind returns are not accepted, as purchase terms are confirmed in writing prior to payment.
How does buyer protection work on Etsy for expensive jewelry?
Etsy's Purchase Protection program funds qualifying buyer refunds automatically up to $250 USD if an item arrives damaged, late, or significantly not as described. For transactions above $250, buyers must first negotiate directly with the shop owner and may open a dispute case with Etsy if the seller does not resolve the issue.
